Promoting academic achievement of all students requires safe and drug-free schools and healthy, resilient youth. The California Department of Education provides several planning and assessment resources to help meet these goals: |

 | California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS): A comprehensive youth health, risk and resiliency survey sponsored by the California Department of Education and available to local education agencies. Core modules assess alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, school violence correlates, physical activity and nutrition. Supplementary and custom modules can be added to assess resilience and youth development, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use-related problems, suicide ideation and attempts, sexual behavior and physical health. A variety of Research Reports based on the CHKS data are also available online.

 | Safe and Healthy Kids Annual Report: The Annual Report contains information about local education agency (LEA) programs, services and outcomes in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, other drug, violence and health prevention. LEAs can use this site to complete their Annual Report online or download a paper form to complete and return. The site also contains accessible databases of past Annual Reports. Viewers can examine reports from individual LEAs or view aggregate findings for the state as a whole, by county or other variables. |

* Approved foods and beverages meet the criteria established in California Education Code sections 49430, 49431, 49431.2, 49431.5, 49431.7 (Senate Bills 12, 965, and 490); and California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 5, Sections 15575-15578. These criteria may or may not comply with additional rules such as those that govern student organization sales (CCR, Title 5, sections 15500 & 15501), Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value (FMNV) (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 7 Part 210.11 Appendix B), or a school district's Local School Wellness Policy.
