Some highlight examples of policy language and components to consider as your LSWP is crafted; others are actual policies adopted by California school districts.

California School District Sample Policies
Benicia USD The Benecia USD document (.doc) includes district policies and administrative regulations for nutrition standards, free and reduced-price meals, other food sales, as well as physical education and nutrition instruction.
Del Norte USD The Del Norte district document (PDF file) features policies for quality of food, student access, and maintaining a healthy nutrition environment.

Sample Policies from Other States
Mississippi Department of Education In March 2005 a group of key stakeholders worked with the Office of Healthy Schools staff to create The Mississippi Local School Wellness Policy – Guide for Development (PDF file).
New Jersey Department of Agriculture This link (PDF file) displays the state Board of Education’s policy addressing nutrition standards, school meal environment, and other food sales.
North Carolina Eat Smart: North Carolina’s Recommended Standards for All Foods Available in School (PDF file) documents policy for vending machines, after-school programs, school events, school meals, and a la carte sales for kindergarten through grade twelve.
Philadelphia Comprehensive School Nutrition Policy Initiative The Comprehensive School Nutrition Policy (PDF file) addresses nutrition education in schools, food service, staff training, family and community involvement, and evaluation.
Texas Department of Agriculture The Texas Public School Nutrition Policy (PDF file) presents requirements of all Texas schools regarding foods of minimal nutritional value, nutrition standards, portions sizes, competitive foods and snacks, and creating a healthy nutrition environment.
Washington State School Director’s Association An outline of services offered by the association and samples of nutrition and physical fitness policies and procedures are included.
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction The School Wellness Policy "Broadening the Policy" (doc) includes policy tips and examples for physical education, health education, staff wellness, and parent involvement.

National Level Sample Policies
Center for Ecoliteracy The Center for Ecoliteracy, Slow Food USA, and the Chez Panisse Foundation prepared a downloadable Model Wellness Policy Guide that offers additional policy language and information in the areas of sustainable agriculture, purchasing locally grown foods, instructional gardens, recycling, and composting.
Center for Food and Justice, Urban and Environmental Policy Institute The Healthy School Food Policies – A Check List (PDF file) provides a range of ideas for policy components, legislative language, monitoring, and enforcement.
Center for Science in the Public Interest This comprehensive web site includes policy options for improving school foods, increasing physical activity, promoting fruit and vegetable consumption, and more.
